UFC 126 Predictions - Silva vs Belfort

The UFC has put together one of the most exciting fight cards in recent memory. On Saturday February 5th, Anderson “The Spider” Silva (27-4) will put his middleweight title on the line against “The Phenom” Victor Belfort (19-8). Silva is coming off of a 5th round submission victory over Chael Sonnen. Sonnen was clearly winning this fight and would have pulled out a decision victory had Silva not caught Sonnen in a triangle choke to retain his title. Silva is an amazing athlete with superior striking skills. Belfort has won his last five fights, four coming by way of KO/TKO due to strikes. Belfort made his UFC return by impressively stopping Rich Franklin in the very first round by TKO. This is a fight that Belfort can win. Although Silva has a superior clinch game and is better on his feet than his opponent, Belfort has power in both hands and may be able to catch Silva with a barrage of punches.

Prediction:
Belfort defeats Silva by TKO in round 4.

The co-main event of the evening should be an interesting matchup between Forrest Griffin(17-6) and Rich “Ace” Franklin (28-5) in a light heavyweight contest. Griffin is one of the rawest, scrappiest fighters in the UFC today. Griffin is looking for back to back wins after defeating Tito Ortiz by a split decision. Previous to the victory over Ortiz, Griffin lost two fights in a row to Anderson Silva and Rashad Evans. Franklin is entering this fight after a stunning first round knockout of UFC legend Chuck Liddell. Previous to the Liddell fight, Franklin lost to Victor Belfort in the first round. Franklin and Griffin are both looking to reestablish themselves as top contenders in the UFC light heavyweight division.

Prediction:
Franklin defeats Griffin by Unanimous Decision.

In the UFC welterweight division, Jake Ellenberger (23-5) takes on Carlos “Ta Danado” Eduardo Rocha (9-0). Ellenberger is coming into this bout with impressive back to back wins over Mike Pyle and John Howard. Although Ellenberger won his last two fights by TKO, Ellenberger’s strengths is his takedown ability and submissions. Rocha has won all but one of his fights by way of submission. While submission is Rocha’s favorite path to victory, Rocha is a very well rounded fighter. Rocha is the type of fighter who can play toward his opponents weaknesses. This fight could be a surprise fight of the night recipient.
Prediction:
Rocha defeats Ellenberger in round 2 by submission.

What may be my favorite fight of the night is the matchup between light heavyweight contenders Jon “Bones” Jones (11-1) and Ryan “Darth” Bader (12-0). Jon Jones has been, in my opinion, one of the most improved and impressive UFC fighters as of late. Jones has shown flashes greatness in his victories over Vladimir Matyushenko and Brandon Vera. Jones’ only defeat came in his match against Matt Hamill when Jones was Disqualified for illegal downward elbows. Bader has been moving through the light heavyweight division with wins over Antonio Rodrigo Noguira and Keith Jardine. Bader is a powerful fighter who strives of off his takedowns and ground and pound. This fight should excel the winner of this fight into championship contention.

Prediction:
Jones defeats Bader in round 2 by KO.

In the newly formed bantamweight division, Miguel Angel Torres (37-3) takes on Antonio Banuelos (19-6). Torres is a well rounded fighter who enjoys attacking with his lethal knees and striking. Torres can also catch his opponent in a quick submission with ease. Torres is coming off of a submission victory over Charlie Valencia in the WEC. Torres had won 17 straight matches before suffering losses to Brian Bowles and Joseph Benavidez. Banuelos is coming into this fight with a unanimous decision over Chad George in the WEC. Banuelos is a very strong wrestler who has viscous ground and pound skills. This should be a great fight between two well rounded fighters.

Prediction:
Banuelos defeats Torres in round 2 by TKO.
